Coming soon to a theatre near you

I saw a trailer for Snakes on a Plane. Is that some kind of joke??? I could just about forgive Samuel L. Jackson for Deep Blue Sea, since he cleverly got himself killed off once it was apparent how terrible a film it was going to be (at least that's my theory) but really, this is too much.

Snakes on a Plane. Gosh I wonder what happens...

SOAP - then perhaps the film has hidden depths...

Snakes On A Plane has been one of the most successful "alternative" marketing campaigns for a film in recent years (probably since Blair Witch).

Turns out it was Samuel L's idea to name it literally. The working draft of the script was called Snakes On A Plane, and they told him they'd some up with something else, like "Terror on Flight 19" or "Journey in to Hell" etc. He made it a condition of his signing up that they call it Snakes On A Plane.

Subsequent to that, even while the film was in production, a whole alternative internet campaign and buzz built around it. Blogs, websites, rumour etc.

As a result, desite it being a relatively disposable film (apparently, I haven't seen it yet) - it was hugely anticipated before it opened, and its opening numbers (as they say) have been rather good.

Do a google for it and you'll find lots of the background.

Oh my God it's all true. Someone even piggybacked on the idea and made a B movie called 'Snakes on a Train' which was released on DVD as the 'proper' film was released in theatres.

And at the MTV movie awards Samuel L. said "No movie shall triumph over Snakes on a Plane. Unless I happen to feel like making a movie called More Motherfucking Snakes on More Motherfucking Planes."

You couldn't make this up...
