Propitious timing

I just realised that my next visitor is going to be here for the Onion Festival at Canico.

What fun we'll have!

Sounds like a great country. We used to have a festival in Stockholm called the Water Festival, but they stopped it because it became too festive. Still, I guess we still have Midsummer, that big festival of snaps and fighting - and the first of May, where all the middle-class people dress up in denim and claim to be "workers".

Too festive?? How do you measure that? I imagine a festivity barometer, like a 1950s Laugh-O-Meter. A little red light flashes when things get too jolly...

Can you think of anything at all you like about Sweden? There must be something!

Hmmm...let's see...

The semla - between Christmas and Easter you can get this delectable bun called semla. It has marzipan paste and whipped cream and is truly divine.

Also Stockholm has wonderful forests, all around the city; I live five minutes from such a forest.

And the heating is ALWAYS free in every apartment, and so is the hot water. You can have 16 baths a day and not pay any extra. An environmental disaster, or course, but very very nice.

That sounds great!

I just googled for semla images - they look gut-blubberingly delightful!

Hmm, I think I may be the guest you mentioned. I quite like onions but I initially felt that I may have mistimed myself in that preceeding flower and suger cane festivals sound rather attractive also.

I note the highpoints of the OnionFest are the procession and the auction. The mind boggles - with a vision somewhere between a WI style largest onion prize and many happy people dressed as onions filling the streets, pelting the crowds with scallions etc Will there be a Onion Princess and what will the requirements be? The possibilities are endless.

Mistimed? Nonsense - you wouldn't want to miss the Onion Festival. It'll be fabulous!

An onion princess - what a brilliant idea! I saw a Miss Asparagus at a parade in Michigan, sitting on a float that read 'Asparagus: Veggie of the Millennium'.

I never quite understood that.
